What grams to milliliters is for

Spoons and cups measure space. Grams and pounds measure mass. The bridge is density: how many grams sit in one milliliter of that ingredient. Water is 1 gram per milliliter. Flour is closer to half of that, so a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of water.

How to use the form

Pick the ingredient, or type a density in grams per milliliter. Enter the grams, then press Calculate. Changing the ingredient does not show a result until you press the button.

A worked example

Water at 1 g/mL: 1 cup is 236.59 milliliters, which is 236.59 grams, or about 8.35 ounces. The same cup of all-purpose flour, at 120 grams per cup, is about 4.23 ounces.

Mistakes that move the answer

  • A US cup is 236.6 milliliters. A metric cup used in some recipes is 250 milliliters.
  • Scooped flour packs heavier than flour spooned into the cup. Weighing is the reliable check.
  • Fluid ounces and weight ounces are different units. This page converts between them only through density.

The reverse, weighing or measuring the same ingredient the other way, is milliliters to grams. The neighboring volume pair is grams to fluid ounces. A whole recipe's cups and grams are the cooking conversion calculator, and a larger or smaller batch is the scaled recipe.
