What Credit Card Interest is for

Credit Card Interest Calculator is the page to open when you need credit card interest from measurements you already have. It belongs with the other financial calculators because that is the work this arithmetic supports. The monthly payment that pays the balance off is the monthly loan payment. Type the entries first. The result stays hidden until you press Calculate, so a half-finished form never flashes a number you might mistake for the answer.

How to fill in this calculator

  1. Loan Amount. Enter the value this part of the job needs.
  2. Interest Rate. Enter the value this part of the job needs.
  3. Payment. Enter the value this part of the job needs.

The formula in plain language

An amortizing payment is the amount that pays the loan off in a set number of months. The monthly rate is the annual rate divided by 12. The payment is principal times that rate times (1 + rate) to the number of months, divided by (1 + rate) to the number of months minus 1. Compound growth multiplies the balance by 1 plus the rate per period, once per period. A contribution added every period grows as an annuity on top of the starting balance.

A worked example

$20,000 at 6% for 60 months pays about $386.66 a month. The 60 payments total $23,200, so the interest is about $3,200.

Rate, term, and payment have to be the same loan. This credit card interest result should agree with compound interest and paying off a credit card.

Mistakes that move the answer

  • The rate field is an annual percent. Typing 0.06 when the field expects 6 makes the loan look almost free.
  • A credit card minimum payment is not the amortizing payment. Paying only the minimum stretches the debt for years.

How to check the result

After Calculate shows the credit card interest result, redo the last operation with a pencil using the rounded figures on the screen. Matching that check means the inputs were read correctly.
