Freight Class Calculator

Enter every measurement Freight Class Calculator asks for, then press Calculate. The result stays blank while you are still typing.

Press Calculate after the entries are in.

What Freight Class is for

Freight Class Calculator is the page to open when you need freight class from measurements you already have. It belongs with the other shipping & freight calculators because that is the work this arithmetic supports. The dimensional weight of that carton is the dimensional weight. Type the entries first. The result stays hidden until you press Calculate, so a half-finished form never flashes a number you might mistake for the answer.

How to fill in this calculator

  1. Length. Enter the value this part of the job needs. The unit list on this field includes in, ft, cm, m.
  2. Width. Enter the value this part of the job needs. The unit list on this field includes in, ft, cm, m.
  3. Height. Enter the value this part of the job needs. The unit list on this field includes in, ft, cm, m.
  4. Weight. Enter the value this part of the job needs. The unit list on this field includes lb, kg.

The formula in plain language

Box volume is length times width times height. Dimensional weight for many parcel carriers divides that cubic-inch volume by 139 to estimate a billable weight in pounds. Cubic meters are the same edges measured in meters and multiplied. Freight class is estimated from density in pounds per cubic foot. A denser crate falls into a lower class.

A worked example

An 18 by 18 by 16 inch carton is 5,184 cubic inches, or 3.0 cubic feet. Divided by 139, the dimensional weight is 37.3 pounds. If the real weight is 22 pounds, the carrier bills the 37.

Carriers bill the greater of real weight and dimensional weight. This freight class figure should agree with CBM and box volume.

Mistakes that move the answer

  • Measure the outermost carton, including bulges.
  • The divisor 139 is a common domestic rule. A carrier can publish a different one.

How to check the result

After Calculate shows the freight class result, redo the last operation with a pencil using the rounded figures on the screen. Matching that check means the inputs were read correctly. If you edit a label or a sentence in this HTML file, reload the page. The form and this article both live in the file, so the edit is what visitors will read.
