The formula in plain language

Fuel cost is the distance divided by the economy, then multiplied by the price per gallon or per liter. An electric comparison uses kilowatt-hours instead of gallons: energy used is distance times the car's kWh per 100 miles, and the cost is that energy times the price per kWh.

A worked example

A car that gets 28 mpg and drives 40 miles a day burns 1.43 gallons. At $3.60 a gallon that is $5.14 a day, about $154 a month.

Mistakes that move the answer
